As a result of so much damage to the environment, it is our responsibility to preserve or recreate ecosystems in order to increase plant and animal diversity over time and one way to do that is through Reforestation. Besides strengthening ecosystems, Reforestation can cope with CO2 storage, the well-being of the local population, and soil retention among many other factors.
Even though Brazil is well-known for having the biggest rainforest in the world, it is also now known for being one of the countries that most contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and global climate change mainly through deforestation. Brazil already lost about 20% of the Amazon rainforest according to Time and it is predicted to have lost 27% by 2030 if nothing is done. As that was not enough, Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, which according to Nature, five hundred years ago had approximately 330 million acres covered (about twice the size of Texas) but today more than 85% of this forest has been destroyed.
With such rich forests, ecosystems, and diversity we can not let this continue to be the scenario. Being aware of that, Reforest and Recycle For The Future initiated a brand new project. It is planned to reforest an area equivalent to 2 hectares in São Tomé City, country of the State of Rio Grande do Norte, located in the Northeast of Brazil. With a seedling nursery capable of housing six thousand seedlings people can calculate their carbon footprint through the carbon footprint calculator, and buy those seedlings and the NGO will be responsible for planting them and taking close care of them.
